For Sale?

 For Sale?

In the song "For Sale?" the main idea is that famous people are tempted into a very indulgent lifestyle. This is something to avoid and resist. The song approaches the topic from one of personal experience and also frames the dichotomy in a religious setting. The song’s tone is very personal and cautionary, as well as being quite stoic in its presentation. The song’s video is framed as a baptism, where Kendrick’s head is submerged underwater and he sees visions(?) of good looking women with their tops of that are trying to seduce him. This is an allegory of sorts for seduction and temptation. Kendrick remains stoic and unresponsive in these parts and ignores what’s going on. The video is a metaphor telling the audience to resist the seduction of the famous lifestyle. The video ends with Kendrick’s head emerging from the water.

Notable artistic choices linked to presentation are, among others, the fact that the “temptation scenes” are shot with red lights along with other colored lights, like green, the camera angle is often low and many scenes seem almost hazy. This creates a bit of unease in the viewer but also helps the religious angle that the video takes. A red color scheme is associated with satanic things and the song talks about “Lucy”(Lucifer) in this part of the song. It also may seem to mimic the famous lifestyle with naked women, neon lights, and hazy air. In contrast, the baptism scenes are lit much more generously and carry a lighter white and blue palette. The video has a sharp contrast between the holy and the unholy or the just and the sinful.

Generally, I like "For Sale?", it is a very interesting video visually and I'd say that I agree with the message it´s promoting. The song has an interesting way of portraying an important issue and I think the video and song have a good dynamic in how they interact.
